For those ready to take notes, we’ve linked the full podcast episode so you can listen to the conversation in Eric’s own words. But before you click over to check it out, we’ve got some of the highlights below for your reading pleasure.

Finding the “Riches in the Niches”

Eric’s career began in community banking, but even in those early days, he gravitated toward innovation, teaching himself HTML in 1995 to launch one of the first community bank websites in the country. That pioneering mindset eventually led him to leave theniche target traditional banking path and join WSI’s global digital marketing network.

One of his core principles: The riches are in the niches. By zeroing in on the community banking industry, an audience he understood better than anyone, Eric built a business that thrives on his deep expertise, not broad generalization.

“You better be pretty damn passionate for what you do, because you’re going to be doing a lot of it,” Eric says. “I love digital marketing, I love community banking, and I love where AI is taking us.”

Trust the System, Then Make It Your Own

When Eric joined WSI, the world’s largest agency network, he was brimming with ideas. But one piece of advice from a WSI co-founder shaped his approach - spend the first year listening and learning before trying to change the system. That willingness to absorb, adapt, and then contribute has helped him become one of WSI’s most recognized leaders.

For entrepreneurs, the takeaway is clear: Confidence matters, but humility accelerates growth.

Adaptability is Non-Negotiable

To some, the selection of focusing on the banking industry may seem obvious, but Eric’s original business plan wasn’t to target community banks directly. But when one approached him for a website, he listened and pivoted. That shift became the foundation for his niche success.

It’s a reminder that business plans are starting points, not shackles. The market will reveal opportunities you never considered; the real skill is in recognizing and seizing them.

The Power of Community

Through speaking engagements and teaching at banking schools, Eric saw how quickly enthusiasm for digital tools could fade without ongoing support. That insight sparked The LinkedBanker — an online mastermind community for bankers who want to innovate, the linkedbanker homescreenbuild personal brands, and connect with like-minded peers.

Launched during the pandemic, The LinkedBanker now offers a safe space for bankers to learn, share, and grow without the constraints of traditional corporate culture.

Looking Ahead

Eric’s enthusiasm for AI mirrors his early advocacy for social media in banking. Just as he once reassured skeptical bankers about actively participating in social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn, he now champions AI as a tool for building stronger customer relationships, creating efficiencies, saving time, and empowering bank staff to “be more human” thanks to the power of AI.

And if you ask him which entrepreneurial mind he’d most like to pick? Steve Jobs tops the list, though Eric’s quick to note that AI tools already offer ways to tap into the thinking of great innovators.
